Steering Rules
- Keep to the Bow Side bank at all times whether going Upstream or Downstream.
- All Single and Double scullers , all coxless boats, please ensure that you check your steering every 4 or 5 strokes, this will go a long way towards avoiding unnecessary clashes.
- Keep your Blade Ends approximately 2 meters from the bank, and any moored boats or fixed obstructions such as Jetties and trees etc, going both Upstream and Downstream
- Always be aware of moored vessels and other permanent or temporary projections from the bank
- Always be aware of other river users and assume that they haven’t seen you, give way to larger vessels especially at Penton Hook Lock. Do not stop in the lock cutting unless it is clear and safe to do so.
- When being passed by a faster boat, move to your bowside to let them by, faster boats must always overtake on the outside ( no passing on the inside at any time) If in doubt the faster boat should hang back or easy until the river is clear to overtake.
- When being approached by another boat always shout “LOOK AHEAD” out LOUD and always assume that they haven’t seen you.
- When stopping your boat always check that it is safe to do so and that you are not obstructing other boats and river users.
- In the summer always be on the lookout for swimmers and between June and March don’t forget the fisherman, give them some space so as not to catch their lines.
- When turning the boat check that the river is clear and turn quickly and safely onto the other side so as not to block the river.
- When turning at Penton Hook, ensure that there are no boats exiting the lock, turn quickly onto the far bank, when the stream is running quickly take special care as the boat will drift while turning.
- When turning at the Motorway Bridge “DO NOT GO THROUGH THE BRIDGE AT ANY TIME”
- “REMEMBER” Always be courteous to other river users they have just as much right to be there as you do.
- Be visible at all times especially when the light is bad.
- Remember “IF IN DOUBT STOP” yours and others safety is paramount it is more important than completing your outing.
