1. Learn to Row:
Burway Rowing Club gives a warm welcome to rowers of all ages and experience levels and provides a fantastic opportunity for anyone from the age of 12 and upwards to row for the first time. The racing squads are always on the lookout for new members and have introduced Learn to Scull courses for all those wishing to take up the sport. The Club runs ongoing courses throughout the year.
Adult Learn to Row Courses – Ongoing
Adult Learn to Row Courses are live, now.
We offer the flexibility of learning to row over a couple of months, for just £95.
Adult learning sessions are Saturday and Sunday mornings (8am – 10) and possibly some opportunity for midweek evening sessions.
All participants will gain an understanding of basic rowing technique as well as important safety information regarding rowing equipment. All participants will spend time in boats as well as on land-based training.
The course will include an introduction to the rowing stroke and equipment used, boat handling, how to get into and out of the boat, rowing together as an entire crew and all aspects of water safety.
At the end of the course, you will be able to become a full club member and either join a racing squad or alternatively become a casual member of the Club.
Please contact the Captain, Gary Needham for more information, using the Contact Us page.
Junior Learn to Row Courses – Ongoing
The Junior Learn to Row Course follows the same principles as the Adult Learn to Row Course, but with a greater emphasis on a steadier development of blade work and power application, reflecting the development of a younger body.
As with the Adults, the participants learn all aspects of rowing as well as important safety information. The course will take place in Club boats as well as in land-based training sessions.
The ongoing courses run for a period a couple of months and costs just £95.
We understand the need for flexibility, so come along to the sessions that you can make and we will endeavour to make any new-to-rowing junior into a competent and confident sculler.
Junior Sessions are Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6pm – 8pm) and Saturday and Sunday mornings (8am -10).
If you would like to learn to row, or to find out more about joining us, then please contact the Junior coach Jim Mathieson, using the Contact Us page.
2. Juniors:
The Junior Squad is an important part of Burway Rowing Club, with a number of Juniors winning rowing scholarships to leading schools as well as becoming national champions and GB representatives. The coaches are all volunteers and have achieved the appropriate coaching qualifications, who encourage the Juniors to race as soon as they are ready.
The training is specially tailored to add to the instruction received on the Junior Learn to Row Course, incorporating safety and capsize drills, building endurance, coordination and all-around physical conditioning.
The Junior Squad is committed to teaching the rewards of rowing and what it means to be a part of a crew. The juniors come from all over Surrey and enjoy great team camaraderie in addition to dedication, hard work, and the thrill of making a boat move or making a crew “click”.
Junior training for those in the racing group takes place at the club on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8 am until 10:30 am, with evening training on both Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Rowing is used by many of the Juniors for their Duke of Edinburgh’s award scheme and Burway has a full calendar of events throughout the year including BBQs, cake sales and the annual coaches’ breakfast. Parents are also encouraged to participate in Club life, with many volunteering for the Winter Heads, boat maintenance and other club events.
If you are an experienced junior and would like to join our junior squad, please contact the Junior coach Jim Mathieson using the Contact Us page.
3. Adults:
Burway Rowing Club’s adult squads welcome recreational and competitive rowers. Adult members row at all levels, aged from early 20s into their 60s.
Outings take place between 8 am and 10:30 am on Saturday and Sunday, with additional training on Monday and Wednesday evenings between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm. Land training involves the use of Concept2 rowing machines as well as weights and Pilates. Crews compete in a full racing calendar, with annual highlights being the Head of the Dart, the Great Ouse Marathon and the Silver Sculls.
Burway is a friendly Club, which enjoys the social nature of rowing. The Club competes throughout the UK, with the weekend away just as important as the competition, whether it’s in Norfolk, Lincolnshire or Devon. Wives, husbands, girlfriends, boyfriends and partners are encouraged to become a valued part of club life, and many children have followed their parents into the Club through the Junior Squad.
