1. Avoiding Fires

1. No smoking is permitted anywhere in the building or within 2 meters of the building.
2. No fuel tanks are to be kept within the building.
3. Paint, thinners, resins hardeners and similar materials must be kept stoppered when not in use and stored safely.
4. Portable electrical appliances must have been safety tested (PAT tested) before regular use within the club.
5. Any electrical items showing signs of damage or wear and tear must be removed from service, immediately.
6. The boathouse, changing rooms and areas surrounding the club must be kept tidy and free from accumulations of flammable material.        

Fire Precautions 

1. Escape routes are marked on the attached drawings and are clearly marked in the club house. These routes must be kept clear at all times, the rear fire door fitted with crash bars must be kept clear at all times, it is incumbent upon all members to ensure that these requirements are followed.
2. The rear fire door must have the security bars removed while the building is occupied, but must be replaced before leaving the club.
3. The club is provided with smoke detectors located at the foot of and the top of the first floor access stairs, these are to be regularly tested.
4. Fire extinguishers are provided in all relevant areas: all members are asked to make themselves familiar with their locations and use. The extinguishers are checked and tested annually by the provider.
5. All fire doors must be kept closed at all times and must not be chocked open at any time.
6. At least annually, a Fire Risk Assessment should be undertaken by the safety officer.
7. At least annually, a practice Fire Drill must be undertaken. Date to be recorded in the Fire Log, together with any issues arising, which must be pursued by the safety officer and reported to the club committee.

In the event of Fire

1. Any member discovering a fire shall immediately raise the alarm by shouting to all areas of the club.
2. If he or she considers it safe to do so, the person discovering the fire may attempt to put it out by using a fire extinguisher or blanket close by.
3. On hearing the alarm call other members and guests shall evacuate the building, those on the ground floor shall leave the building via any of the main doors, those upstairs shall leave the building via the rear fire escape door. Escape routes are shown on the attached drawings. The assembly point is the Burway Rowing Club car park sign at the front of the car park.
4. The following shall take charge in the event of fire in the clubhouse:
   
   • The safety officer if present
   • In his or her absence the most senior officer or coach present
   • If no officer or coach is present a club member will take charge.
   • This person shall
     • Contact the Emergency Services using the club phone if accessible or alternatively a mobile phone.
     • Contact the Calor Emergency number displayed at the gas enclosure and shut off the gas emergency shut off valve located at the rear of the clubhouse.
     • Ascertain as far as possible who was in the building and conduct a roll- call once everyone is at the assembly point.
5. No person shall re-enter the building until the emergency services have confirmed that it is safe to do so.
6. A full incident report shall be recorded on the on-line incident report at www.britishrowing.org (whether or not the emergency services were called)
