Henley Row Past

Welcome to
Burway Rowing Club

Burway is a very friendly and competitive rowing club situated on the River Thames between Laleham and Chertsey. Membership is available to all, from beginners to experienced masters.

Latest News:-

Regattas update – We have raced at Walton & Weybridge, Marlow Town, Thames Valley Park and also, for the first time in a while, at Henley Royal Regatta. The weather, the buoys and some very good opposition have halted our winning run but the effort put in by our scullers has been huge. Well done to all who have competed and thank you to all parents, supporters, coaches and special thanks to all those getting the boats to and from the regattas.

11.5.25 – Ball Cup South – Burway junior scullers entered 4 events and came away with 3 medals. Just missing out on her final, by a mere 0.82 second, Jess was very unlucky not to challenge for the medals. Eddie and Adam were both 3rd in their finals and Tsai-Men won the Silver, in his. A long, hot day but huge thanks to all the coaches, racers and supporters. Well done Burway!

3.5.25 – FIRST REGATTA OF THE SEASON – FIRST WINS FOR BURWAY!

Fantastic first-time wins for Tsai-Men, in J16 1x and Eddie Smith in J14 1x, at Marlow Spring Regatta. Well done guys and thanks to Steve and Hugh for getting them and their boats, there.

We hope to see you or hear from you.

Congratulations to our 2024 Award Winners, who were presented with their prizes at the AGM.

Most successful Senior: Ollie, Junior: Emmie.

Most improved Senior: Eng-Jon Ong, Junior: Tsai-Men Ong.

Club Person of the Year:- Emmie, for not only winning races but for displaying fantastic sportsmanship.

Burway 500m Ergo Challenge 2024 was won by Darcey, who achieved a time better than the 2023 British Rowing Indoor Champion. Chris Thomas, in 2nd place, was also quicker than his event winner at BRIC and posted the fastest time overall at Burway in 2024. For top ten results, see below. Well done to them and everyone who took part.

Burway Rowing Club was sad to learn of the recent death of John Sanson. Whilst not a member of the club, John has supported us for many years and will be missed, especially by those who were close to him. For those who have sculled in ‘The Spotty Boat’, that was given to the club by John. He was an accomplished painter and his lovely painting of our Henley Royal Regatta row past crew, is upstairs, in the club. We offer our sincere condolences to his wife, June and his family and friends.

We have been successful in our application for funding from Sport England, which will help us in the renovation of the riverbank and purchase of a new landing stage. Burway Rowing Club is very grateful to Sport England for the award.

We have receved our new blades and are very grateful to The Rowing Foundation for their contribution of 50% of the cost. Thank you.

Olympic News

Tom and crew were 4th in the Final of the Mens Quads at the Paris Olympics. Just missing out on a medal this time (by only 1.92 seconds) but a fantastic effort and achievement from the whole GB crew. Well done all, we are very proud of you!

…….And a busy time ahead for Tom, who is getting married at the end of August. Congratulations to Tom and Ellie!

– Tom Barras and crew were 2nd in their Heat of the 4x, which takes Tom into his second Olympic Final. Good Luck Tom from all at Burway. Tom’s fiancee Ellie asked various groups/friends/family to spell out a message for him. Thank you to Rebecca and Alistair for the drone work and to all those who were there for the photo, which resulted in us putting in the letter ‘K’.

28.7.2024 – Staines Regatta – A big shout out to Eddie Smith, who enjoyed his first race, winning his Heat by 2 1/2 lengths, in J13 1x (rowing up a year as there were no J12 events) but then losing in the Final to a good Walbrook sculler. Emmie also made the trip up river, only to be left waiting to boat for ages before an announcement that the whole regatta had been cancelled, because of Swans on the river. All who were there agreed that this was completely unprecedented in all our past experiences of regattas.

20th & 21st July 2024 – Molesey Regatta – Brilliant weekend for Burway, with 3 wins in 3 events entered.

Olly won the Open 1x T2 beating the Vesta sculler (who had narrowly beaten Nathaniel in the Heat, by a canvas). Then Olly & DJ beat their Poplar, Blackwall & District opposition in the final of Op 2x. And, on Sunday, while our other 2 entries were unable to race through illness, Emmie won her 2 heats in WJ15 1x and then had a very tough race but held off her opposition, from LEH, to win the final, by 1/4 length. Fantastic racing and support. Special thanks to Tracey and Richard who ferried the boats, safely, to and from, Nottingham and Molesey. Thank you very much. We couldn’t have achieved this without you.

19.7.2024 – British Rowing Junior and Senior Club Championships – Nathaniel was up against some very strong and experienced opposition in the Open Championship Ligtweight Singles and raced 3 times in a few hours, finishing 2nd in the B Final. Great effort!

13th & 14th July 2024 – Kingston Regatta – Fantastic win for Nathaniel in Op B2 1x, beating Curlew easily in 1st heat, then Molesey sculler by 1 foot and winning the final against Twickenham sculler (who had earlier only just beaten Olly in a heat) by 2 1/2 lengths. Josh and Emmie were 2nd in their heats and Connell and Tsai-Men 3rd in theirs, in some pretty choppy and difficult conditions. Ellie’s composite crew won their heat but lost to Kingston/Walbrook in the final, by just 1 length. Some great racing and thanks to Richard for getting the boats there, Steve for getting them back again and all the coaches and families for their support.

13.7.2024 – The club is most grateful to ‘The Rowing Foundation’ for a matched funding grant of £3,450, which has enabled us to buy 16 sets of new sculling blades. Thank you!

Henley Royal Regatta – whilst Burway were not competing this year, we did have a few notable connections to the racing. Nathaniel and his Nottingham University crew narrowly missed out in the Qualifiers, John Biddle was regularly seen managing the crews around the boating tent and, his son, Eddie, spent 6 days on the stakeboats, in all weathers. But pride of place must go to Chris Hermes, an ex junior of ours and fantastic supporter of the club, whose Headington School crew won the Prince Philip Challenge Trophy for the second time in 4 years. Well done Chris!

30.6.2024 – Burway Juniors were at Egham Regatta, where they all raced really well in difficult conditions. Tsai-Men just lost his heat to one of the finalists in J15 1x, Jess & Emmie, in WJ16 2x lost to the winners in their heat and Adam lost to the eventual winner in his heat of J16 1x. Then in their singles, Jess won 2 races but was just beaten in the final (where, interestingly, the two scullers had managed to swap sides during the race) and Emmie won 3 races before losing out in her final.

Not only did they do well on the water but we received this lovely message from a mum, after the regatta:- ‘I would like to pass on my compliments to the lovely WJ15 1x finalist (GREEN) who competed against my daughter ((BRUCE) at Egham yesterday, Sunday 30th June.
She showed terrific sportsmanship by coming up to Evie to congratulate her at the end of the race. There were many Maidenhead parents nearby who noticed and who were impressed by her good manners and sportsmanship – heartwarming to see. Again, please let her know my daughter was very touched’.

29.6.2024 – Ironbridge Regatta – Great win for Ellie Needham, rowing for Burway RC, in the Mixed 2x with Jake Swan from Cardiff University.

Congratulations to Tom Barras, who has been selected to represent GB in the Men’s 4x at the Paris Olympics. Everyone at Burway Rowing Club wishes Tom, Callum Dixon, Matt Haywood and Graeme Thomas, all the very best.

23.6.2024 – Thames Valley Park Regatta – Fantastic win for Emmie in WJ15 1x beating strong opposition in her Heat then winning the Final by 1 2/3 lengths. And some great racing and effort from our other scullers, Adam, Indi, Connell, Tsai-Men and Jess. Well done everyone and thank you to the coaches, supporters and particularly to Richard for getting the boats there and back, safely.

16th & 17th June 2024 – Masters Championships at Nottingham – Fantastic win for Alistair Ross in the Open Intermediate 50+ 1x on Sunday after finishing 4th (by just half a second, on  the Saturday in Open D 1x). All that practice in the headwind at Burway obviously helped! Well done, Alistair.

Burway’s 500 metre ergo challenge for 2024 is well under way. Darcey is leading, with a time that would have won her the gold medal at the Indoor Championships. Chris Thomas in second and Eddie Smith in 3rd. Open to all members.

12.5.2024 – Our first regatta of the season after months of not being able to get on the river – The Ball Cup (South) at a very hot and sunny Dorney lake. Indi was 3rd in her heat and 5th in the Final. Emmie, 2nd in heat, 4th in Final. Connell, 5th in heat but suffered in the conditions. Jess was 2nd in her heat and won a terrific Bronze Medal in the Final. Jess & Emmie took a brilliant Silver Medal in their double scull event. Josh was 2nd in his heat ………. but then went for a swim at the start of his Final. Finally, a fantastic effort from Scarlett (Bishopsgate School) who finished 3rd in her heat and 7th overall, in only her 2nd outing in a single scull. Amazing!

A huge thank you to Richard and Tracey for getting the boats there, and to all who came along to help and support.

5.5.2024 – Burway RC were proud to host the 4 Dads Row crew, during their mammoth row down the Thames from Lechlade to Putney. They are raising money for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and Love Rowing, Changing Lives Together Charity.

Tremendous achievement. Well done to everyone involved.

For more details and opportunity to donate click here.

1.3.2024 – Well done to Jess, who competed at the National Junior Indoor Rowing competition, at the Copper Box, and finished in an excellent 5th position on the day (6th overall, once the Leeds scores were included). In the 6 minutes Jess covered 1,551 metres, not far behind the winner’s 1,620 metres. Great work, Jess!

10.2.2024 – BINGO Night – Many thanks to Tracey, Richard and Connell for organising and running the bingo night, which was much enjoyed by all who attended.

Thank you to all who attended the AGM and congratulations to all our award winners:-  Maia – most successful junior, Alistair and Ellie (jointly) – most successful senior(s), Indi – most improved junior, Connell – cox of the year and Jess – 500m ergo competition.

Thank you to Paul for all his years as Captain and to Gary for taking over the captaincy, we wish you well.

Although they couldn’t go on the river because of the fast stream, it was good to see a Burway VIII at the cinema, for ‘The Boys In The Boat’.

Would you like to Learn To Row? It is a great way to get fit and have fun. Adult and Junior courses available. Please contact us for more details.

24.12.23 – Unfortunately, the fast stream has caused the cancellation of the Boxing Day Challenge against Staines Boat Club. Best wishes to everyone at Burway and Staines for a Happy Christmas and let’s hope the river becomes rowable again, early in the New Year.

14.10.2023 – Win for Alastair in Mas C1x at Weybridge Silver Sculls. Other racers (in very changeable and challenging stream conditions during the day) were Fikret 5th, Jess& Emmie 12th, Josh 15th, Connell 17th, Adam 20th (out of 30) and Jess 22nd (out of 34). Well done to all who competed and to the coaches and supporters who helped, throughout the day.

28.8.2023 – 2 wins for Ellie, rowing for Burway in a Black Sheep composite (and 2 x 2nd places as well!) at Gloucester and Ross regattas. Well done Ellie!

August 2023 – >>Burway’s 500 metre Ergo Challenge<< – update – A new leader, Jess, followed by Islay and Ollie. Open to all club members, see leaderboard below.

22nd & 23rd July 23 – Staines Regatta – A fleet of Burway boats headed up through Penton Hook lock for Staines Regatta and there was some great racing, despite the damp conditions. Not damp enough for Adam, who, unfortunately, capsized in his Final. Connell had a battle with Josh DQ and came out on top, to meet a very tough opponent in the Final. Maia and Jess also won through to their finals but couldn’t quite outpace their opponents. Scratch crew Mix 4x- Nathan, Ellie, Austin & Issy, were beaten by just a canvas in their Final. But pride of place to Alastair Ross, who overcame opposition from Poplar Blackwall and then Twickenham, to win the Masters C 1x.

On the Sunday, another 6 boats from Burway took part, with 2 getting into their finals. The W2x Sophie & Chelsea and Op2x Nathan & Dom, both won their heats but came up against strong crews from Reading in their Finals. Well done to all who took part, and thank you to all who supported or helped out.

16.7.23 – Molesey Regatta – A very windy Saturday meant racing was curtailed early. Ollie did manage to get through to the final but lost in extremely difficult conditions. More events were cancelled on Sunday but Burway enjoyed their first success of the season, when Maia won WJ16 1x, in a very strong competition. Well done Maia!   There were heat wins for Connell, Ollie and Josh. Once again, thanks to all those towing, helping and supporting our competitors.

9.7.23 – Kingston Regatta – Another large entry from Burway, 11 boats in all, competed over the 2 day regatta. No wins but some excellent performances. Jess was very unlucky when her heat  was adjudged to be a dead heat, then, when closing in on a win in the re-row, went for a swim! Ollie won his heat but was beaten in the semi final. Thanks to all who helped and supported.

Burway Rowing Club recently lost a very dear friend when our oldest and longest serving member, Peter Pattinson sadly passed away. Peter has been a real stalwart of the club since the 1950’s and our thoughts are with Ena and the family, to whom we offer our sincere condolencies.

18.6.23 – Thames Valley Park Regatta – A strong entry from the Burway juniors, who all competed well, with Ollie coming 2nd in his final, having won the heat. Thanks to Jim, Paul and Hugh and all the parents who helped.

10.6.23 – Marlow Town Regatta – Well done to all who competed at Marlow and for coaches and supporters on the day.

8.5.23 – Burway Scratch Quads, followed by a BBQ and a Coronation Bake-Off, where there were some great entries and the winning cake was made by Amelia V. Thanks to Tracey, Richard and everyone who helped make the day such a success.

7.5.23 – Great day’s racing at the fantastic Ball Cup, on the Olympic lake at Dorney. Lots of juniors entered for their first races and delighted to see 3 Burway medals. Jess M, Emmie and Adam all won Bronze Medals. Well done to them and all who took part, plus all the coaches and supporters.
