(Secretaries cup)

Molesey

Molesey saw an outing for the senior squad with Sam Barret in Novice 1x, Ricky Cowley in im3 1x and the pair of them teaming up to race im2 2x. The day was kicked off with an impressive bit of racing in the 2x where Ricky and Sam comfortably won their first heat. Next up was the two singles races. Sam in Novice 1x unfortunately had steering issues off the start and could not get back into the race in time. Ricky however won his first race comfortably.
The time then came for the pair to get back into the double where they were unfortunatly beaten comfortably by a better crew.
The rest of the regatta fell on Ricky’s shoulders. He won his next two races comfortably and won his final by 2 lengths .

Nat Champs 2009

This year we took 4 crews to the National Rowing Championships held at
Nottingham,a and as usual the Nottingham weather and conditions were a main
topic of conversation.
On the first day of racing the whole area was covered in cloud under a low pressure zone which resulted in a day of mostly rain, but also gave very good flat conditions.WJ14 1X - Helen Cowley, in her first attempt at the Nationals in a single was unfortunate to come up against a very good field and although she sculled very well she unfortunately failed to progress any further in the regatta, but given the experience Helen will be back.J16 4X  the crew of Jon Lucking, Justin Thomas, Tom Barras and Mike Simargool drew the heat from hell in their first race, the opposition being three of the most successful J16 crews of the current year, while the lads sculled well they failed to make it directly through to the final and were faced with a reparcharge, one crew pulled out due to illness and as a result the lads found themselves in the final.
On Saturday we awoke to normal Nottingham weather, sun and showers with high
winds that seemed to continually change direction throughout the day.
In the final the crew were drawn in lane 1 which at the time was one of the unfavoured lanes, they raced extremely well alongside the Henley crew, unfortunately  missing out on a medal by just over a second in the last part of the course, coming 4th is the worst place to finish but all credit to the crew they raced their hearts out, considering 2 of the crew are still J15 it was a great effort.
The weather on Sunday followed the pattern of Saturday with strong winds mainly head to head cross.
WJ18 2X - Emma Corless and Tina Thomas, as with the lads Emma and Tina found themselves in a very hard heat and had to settle for a place in the rep to get to the final, this they duly achieved.
In the final as with the quad they were in lane 1 which again was an unfavourable lane, although they raced well they found themselves off the pace and did not gain a medal.WJ4-  A composite with Maidenhead, the crew of Emma Corless, Tina Thomas, Aimee Broadbent and Ailsa Buck did not have a particularly good race in the heat and again were faced with a rep to progress to the final, a crew dropped out and they were straight into the final where they raced very well.
After a dodgy start in a wind affected race they gradually pulled themselves through the field to gain a much deserved Bronze Medal.

Egham

G Scofield lost in the 1st heat of j15 1x along with H Cowley in wj14 1x and Eleanor Ferrelly in wj13 1x while J Chew made up for swimming at Weybridge by winning wj15 1x congratulations to Jo.

Richmond

J Barrett won Elite 1x, while S Barrett kept his Nv status losing in the first round of the Nv 1x combined they got to the final of im2 2x missing out in the final.

TVP

Despite a valiant effort by everyone only C Thomas & E Corless came away with a win in wj 2x, C Thomas lost in the wj 1x final, while G Scofield j15 1x, J Chew wj15 1x & S Tweddell & H Cowley wj14 2x all got knocked out in preliminary rounds.

Marlow

S Biddle raced in Snr 1x but wasn’t able to make any impact in the final. He then joined J Barrett, S Barrett & R Cowley in im1 4x where after a nail biting semi which nearly saw them going home early, they found themselves in the final. Despite putting all they could into the race they were out classed by stronger crews.

Weybridge ladies

J Chew in her first regatta put up a good fight coming from behind to challenge for 1st place but caught a crab and ended up swimming. H Cowley missed out in the final of wj14 1x but Eleanor Ferrelly won wj13 1x.

Walton

S Barrett gave away a win in Nv 1x. Leaving R Cowley holding the flag and he didn’t disappoint finally losing his NV status as he cruised to a win in the NV 1x final. T Barras & M Simagol also won in j15 2x in a close finish. Congratulations to Ricky…..about time.

The Met

S Biddle & R Cowley raced im1 2x on sat & sun coming 5/6 on the Saturday. After a switch round, with Ricky at stroke and Simon at bow they just missed the final by .38 secs despite a nail biting race.

Nat sch

The junior women of the club did well at the Nat schools representing the club in the semi finals in wj 2x with C Thomas & E Corless along with wj15 2x with H Cowley & S Tweddell. T Barras won gold in j15 1x but was racing under Tiffin colours despite being trained by burway and going up with the burway team

Ball-Cup

The following weekend brought with it the Ball-Cup, burway only had two entries this year in the event, Eleanor sculling in WJ13 1x came 1st in her semi but had to then settle for 3rd in final being just off the pace. While Sophie Tweddle came 2nd in her semi of WJ14 1x again a promising performance but she could only manage 4th place in the final.

Marlow spring

Marlow Spring was the turn of the juniors to step up to the plate, with a reasonably sized entry from the club expectations of numerous wins were high, Tina Thomas started the ball rolling in the first wave winning WJ18 1x, she then went on to race with Emma Corless and win WJ18 2x by the narrowest of margins, the finish line coming too soon for their opponents. The junior men not to be out done won their J16 4x semi then rowed over in style in the final, to win by default due to the ill health of one of the members in the opposing crew. Unfortunately that was all the juniors could muster from the event other than some impressive attempts that saw several just missing out on the glory.

Wallingford

After the experience at Notts city the mens quad (Jack Barret, Simon Biddle, Sam Barret and Ricky Cowley) only had a week to regroup and prepare for a potentially harder race against stronger opposition at Wallingford. For some of the crews in the final it was just a training session on the way to potentially greater success, but for the burway crew it was to be their final race in the quad this season. Off the start three off the crews (all junior) made their intentions clear as they pulled out healthy leads on the other four crews, as the race progressed to the end phase burway and Exeter pulled away as well, both hungry for fourth place. Despite a valiant effort by the mens crew they had to settle for a disappointing fifth place.

Notts City Regatta

The developing Burway senior men’s squad finally stopped training long enough to race at Nottingham City Regatta held at Holme PierrePoint.  The first race of the day for the Squad was in the Im1 4x (aka S2 4x) The crew from stroke were, Jack Barrett, Simon Biddle, Sam Barrett and Ricky Cowley. Despite a somewhat less than efficient start, the quad worked their way up the field finally crossing the line in 3rd place in the final. A great perfomance considering two of the crew members were novice and hadn’t done a 2k race before and for Sam Barrett it was a baptism of fire having never raced before.

The quad then separated for the afternoon division seeing Ricky race Elite Lwt 1x , Simon Im1 1x and Jack and sam race Im2 2x.  First up was Ricky challenging for Lightweight glory. In his semi he sculled himself into the 2nd qualification position and comfortably crossed the line with a ticket to the final.  Second up was Simon in Im1 1x with a lack of competitors and after a little negotiation between the athletes and Umpires, the two semi-finals were collapsed into a five horse straight final. After a bad start, he was left at the back of the field until 750m to go when he managed to work his way into 3rd place. Next was the Barrett brothers, in Im2 2x beating a Staines double to get the second qualification position to the final.

Soon came the final for Ricky in Elite Lightweight 1x. Despite a valiant effort, and finding himself somewhat out his depth he settled for sixth place.

Finally the double took to the start with the final hope of glory for the squad.  Again, like the previous races they fought hard, but had to settle for third place.

Congratulations to all a good days racing and on behalf of those who raced a big thank you to those who made the trip to Nottingham to support.
